Check the building before booking bulk collection
DPW collects bulky items by appointment from eligible households receiving its trash service, including single-family homes and buildings with three or fewer living units. Larger apartment buildings, condominiums, co-ops and commercial properties need a private licensed hauler.
Book through 311 and check the accepted-item list. DPW allows no more than seven items per appointment; use the confirmed set-out instructions rather than leaving furniture outside while waiting for a date.
Give the yard cleanup its own request
DC's year-round yard-waste service is appointment based for eligible DPW households. It accepts up to twenty paper bags, with separate preparation rules for bundled branches. Plastic bags are not accepted.
Keep dirt, rubble, treated lumber and ordinary household trash out of that stream. A garden renovation involving paving or soil removal needs more than a request for leaves and cuttings.
Resolve the public-space position for project debris
DPW bulk collection excludes construction and demolition materials such as bricks, concrete and ceiling tiles. Describe these separately in a project disposal enquiry instead of adding them to furniture.
Check the boundary of the proposed dumpster position and its effect on the sidewalk, alley or roadway. Consult DDOT's public-space permit process through TOPS before agreeing delivery; confirm who handles the application and any parking arrangements.
Explain how the load will reach the vehicle
For a basement or upper-floor clearance, show steps, narrow doors and the path outside. Include building access hours, lift reservations and a contact who can admit the crew.
