Book DC bulk collection before placing items out
DPW collects accepted bulky items by appointment from households that receive its trash service, including single-family homes and residential buildings with no more than three units. The current program limits the number of items per appointment and sets a short overnight set-out window.
Apartment buildings with four or more units, condominiums, co-ops and commercial properties need a private licensed hauler. A junk-removal crew also makes sense when items need carrying from an upper floor, basement or interior room rather than collection from the normal trash point.

Keep yard waste separate from rubble and household trash
DC yard-waste collection is available year-round by appointment for eligible DPW households. Leaves, grass, weeds and qualifying small branches use paper bags or the preparation method specified by DPW; plastic bags and mixed household trash are not accepted in this stream.
Dirt, stone, concrete, treated timber, paint, electronics and oversized limbs need another route. Keep a landscaping load separated before requesting service so reusable green material is not turned into mixed disposal waste.

Plan DC construction debris and public-space placement
Bricks, concrete, ceiling tiles, dirt and other renovation or demolition material are not accepted in DPW residential bulk collection. These loads need an appropriate private hauling, construction-waste or dumpster route.
A driveway or private loading area may avoid street occupation, but Washington's public space includes roadways, sidewalks, alleys and other publicly owned space between property lines. When a dumpster or related operation occupies that space, check the correct DDOT permit through TOPS before confirming delivery.
