NYC residents can set out up to six eligible large items per collection day without booking a pickup appointment. Metal and rigid plastic follow recycling collection; other non-recyclable bulky items belong on the trash-only day.
Use the item-specific guidance for mattresses, refrigerant appliances and electronics. Do not assume that every object too large for a bin follows the same preparation or collection route.
NYC DOT's commercial refuse-container permit covers one container beside the street curb for up to five consecutive days. It does not reserve parking. Eligible construction sites have a separate construction-debris permit route for registered general contractors.
Ask the provider to identify the permit and assess the delivery position before fixing the rental period. A superintendent's agreement to use an entrance does not settle whether the truck can reach the curb.
DSNY distinguishes small DIY work from professional construction. Contractor-generated debris cannot be discarded as residential garbage; major renovation loads need private disposal. Check the current DIY eligibility and material rules before relying on curbside collection.
For an apartment cleanout, photograph the stairs, lift and path outside as well as the furniture. Tell the crew about any elevator reservation, dismantling or deadline for returning the keys.
In an implemented Commercial Waste Zone, covered business collection must use a zone-authorized carter. Check DSNY's address and rollout guidance before requesting a new agreement; construction debris and other exempt streams need their own assessment.
