Book household bulk before putting it outside
Atlanta's current guidance puts scheduled bulk collection on the regular weekly collection day. It still requires booking at least one business day ahead, with 12 collections per year and a standard collection of up to 8 cubic yards.
Use the City scheduling service or ATL311 to check your remaining allowance and item list. Follow the confirmed set-out instructions rather than leaving a pile outside while a private quote is pending.
- Do not set out before 7 p.m. the preceding day
- Leave at least 6 feet between bulk and carts or yard trimmings
Prepare routine yard trimmings as a separate load
The City accepts routine household yard trimmings in paper yard bags or correctly marked reusable containers. Plastic bags, loose soil and professional landscaping waste do not belong in that route.
Check the current branch, bag and container limits before preparation. Ask your landscape contractor to include removal in the work description; do not assume a household collection will take the resulting pile.
Describe renovation waste by material
List drywall, roofing, masonry, wood and fixtures separately from household furniture. Check each item against City acceptance guidance, and request a project-specific route for anything excluded.
For a dumpster quote, state the material, approximate quantity and loading responsibility. Ask for both the permitted load and the weight included in the price. Keep chemicals and uncertain materials outside the ordinary load until a suitable route is confirmed.
Resolve placement and carrying before committing
Atlanta DOT requires a permit for dumpsters and containers placed in the City's public right-of-way. Its application requirements include insurance documentation and a provider compliance agreement. Confirm responsibility for those steps before arranging delivery.
For private placement, send photos of the position and truck approach. If furniture must come down stairs or through narrow doors, describe that carrying work in a junk-removal request.
